For the best results I suggest using high quality cheesecloth with a strainer such as the RSVP Endurance Conical Strainer 5” to remove the plant matter. The mixture is then poured into the strainer. Allow it to drip/flow onto the cheesecloth. The cheesecloth will strain the herb. This produces a very clear oil/butter.
You will need to strain the butter through a mesh strainer if you are using only butter. This introduces more plant matter into your final product. A second reason is that any inert material from the cheesecloth, which somehow made it through, will sink to bottom during separation. This prevents it from ending up in the butter, which floats to its top. All this water will be filtered! Dosing – How Much Cannabis to Use When Making Butter? The “standard” amount for a butter recipe is 1 oz of cannabis buds to 1 pound of butter. For the same amount of standard dosage, trim should be used with 3 oz to 1 pound butter. You can add more or less, depending on your desired potency. If you want very strong butter, use more cannabis with less butter. You should be cautious at first as it can make your life miserable if you eat too many cannabutter. If you are making your first butter, it is a good idea to use less butter than you initially think. Edibles can be far stronger than any type of cannabis you smoke, and although you can always eat more edibles, you can’t take them back after the fact. Too strong edibles can cause nausea and make you feel nauseous. So, limit your intake. You can adjust the dosage to suit your tolerance once you’re more aware. The ratio of cannabis to butter in this cannabutter recipe is considered a “standard” dose. This cannabutter will be very strong, but not too strong. This butter can be substituted in any recipe that calls for butter, if you are using high-quality cannabis.
